difficultyは、「努力すれば可能な困難」のニュアンスがあり可能性50%以上くらいですが、言いっぱなしな感じがします。一方でchallenging (challengedの形よりよく使われます)の方が「困難だけれど、取り組み甲斐がある」とポジティブな印象があり、ネイティブの間ではこちらの方がよく使われると思います。
Let’s say, “They have financial difficulty” sounds more troublesome, not easy situation. On the other hand, “They are financially challenged” means they are in a trouble, but they manage to exit the situation with positive attitude. So, “difficulty” has more strong and negative connotation.
私もdifficultyの方が強く感じます。challengedと言うと道があるのが見えるのですがdifficultyの方だと厳しく道がないかも知れないように感じるからです。
