In Emma only a small proportion of the narrative can be pinned down as being told by a neutral third-person narrator; and with every rereading that proportion seems to reduce, as more and more of the narrative seems to slip in and out, or partly in and out, of the consciousness of the characters, seeing only, or mainly, what they see, almost always falsely or partially.
