spinal mountain rangeのspinalは山面の凸凹をさしています。リンク先の画像を見て頂ければ分かりやすいと思います。
with 44% of the slopes at 40% or moreの40%は40°の間違いでしょうか。このままでは意味不明です。

論文にはwith 44% of the slopes at 40% or moreと書かれていたのですが
with 44% of the slopes at 40°or moreの間違いだとすると
「山の44％は40°もしくはそれ以上の傾斜である」という意味でしょうか？
いえす、「山の44％は40°もしくはそれ以上の傾斜である」という意味になります。
