”this” が指すものをご教示ください

最近のフィナンシャルタイムズ紙の社説に　
To label the continent with the world’s youngest and fastest growing population as such is to assume the past defines the future. Many countries in Asia, once written off as perennially backward in often overtly racist terms, have proved this to be nonsense.
とあったのですが（9月4日付”Perceptions of Africa lag behind the brightening reality”）

この最後にでてくるproved this to be nonsenseの “this” は何を指しているのでしょうか？　
once written off as permanently backwardの部分でしょうか、それとも、
その前にあるto assume the past defines the futureでしょうか？　私は後者だと思うのですが。ご教示願います。
