3行目のif I don’t go slower, I would〜の文は、助動詞wouldがあるから、if I didn’t go slower〜の方が正しいと思うのですが。仮定法と絡めて教えてくださると嬉しいです。

There’s this stream I have to cross every morning to get to work. It’s not difficult, but I can guarantee, with my clutziness, if I don’t go slower, I would tumble into the water. This other girl just ran across this morning ahead of me. If I were to attempt it with my short legs, I would be face first on a rock then in the water.

If I didn’t go slower ですと、過去形になります。話が例えば、there’s this stream that I had to cross yesterday morning.. だったらdidn’t がいいと思います。
話し言葉でソーシャルメディアへの投稿だろうから、特に違和感はありませんが、厳密に言えば、if I don’t go slow, I might tumble into the water のような構成のほうが正しいです。
それか後半の別の女の子の話が先にきて、その後にIf I don’t go slower than she..という比較しているような構成ならokになります。
買いた本人が恐らく思い付きで書いてますので、前後が逆になってますが、会話・カジュアルな文章だったら誰も気付かないでしょう。
